HoliMont 2012 – Trip Summary

On February 17, 2012 thirty three intrepid skiers, and a couple of snowboarders, boarded the bus for a one day trip to HoliMont in Ellicottville, N Y. The weather man cooperated and gave us a mix of colder temperatures, a few peeks of sunshine, and good snow conditions for riding and carving. The trip leaders promises for a powder day at HoliMont, however, went sadly unfulfilled. The usual assortment of snacks and beverages got everyone fueled up for the days adventures on our ride to New York. Almost a dozen of our participants made this their first trip with the Lewis Ski Club, and earned their membership pins in the process! Thanks to Lisa F. for bringing an envelope of them for me to pass out to our newest members. An uncrowded lodge was waiting for us, along with a bus full of our friends and fellow skiers from HiRise. The lift tickets and a couple rentals were dispatched quickly and everyone hit the slopes to enjoy the day. Our celebrity ski instructor, Mikel K. was in attendance, escorting his merry band of pupils down the slopes like a Pied Piper of PSIA. Thanks for the tip, Mike, it really helped at Combined! It seemed everyone remembered their cash for the cafeteria, or enjoyed their own brown bag repast. Dina’s catering at HoliMont is second to none, IMHO! The afternoon gave us some of the best runs of the day, as the sun warmed the snow to a perfect carving consistency before the clouds moved back in and the temps fell enough to reset things as last chair approached. Given the weather we faced for most of the winter that never was, I’d say it was a spectacular day. A quick change to street clothes, load the bus, and off to Ellicottville for dinner and a few adult beverages. The remains of Joe G’s selection of homebrews got us back to Cleveland in style, none the worse for wear, mellow, tired, and satisfied after a fine day on the slopes.
