Description:

A Day at Kelley’s Island-Saturday August 17th

The short blast of the ferry boat horn signals the start of your adventure. In just twenty minutes the fresh crisp breezes and sparkling blue water take you to the lush greenery of an enchanting island. Kelley’s Island is located in the western basin of Lake Erie about four miles north of Marblehead and twelve miles from Sandusky on the Ohio mainland. The entire island measures more than four square miles and is the largest fresh water American island in Lake Erie. A short drive from major cities makes Kelley’s seem right next door, yet the Canadian Border lies only a few miles north of the island.

Please join me for a fun day on Kelley’s Island. Things to see & do: bike or golf cart rental to get around the Island. View the Glacier groves, go shopping for unique items, swim at the sandy beach, eat at one of the many restaurants, drinking at one of the many bars or at the brewery or sample some island wines at the winery, or just relaxing and people watching. I plan on being at the ferry around 9:30 am. The ferry leaves every 1/2 hr. If you want to meet-up, give me a call on my cell. Lisa Ferenc

Trip Report:

We were off to a good start with Jan & Matt Dubas, their friend and myself catching the 9:30 ferry and arriving on the island at 10:00 am. We walked around and did some window shopping for the first hour. It was Kelly’s Island homecoming day and there were plenty of people lining the streets for the parade. After watching the parade and catching some candies thrown by parade entrants to eat during our bike ride, we headed out to look over the Glacial  Groves National Natural landmark, beach area and quarry. The weather was perfect.

We stopped at the Brewery for a nice lunch and ran into Bruce & Elise Frankenfield and Joe & Lynn Roche who were just sitting down to eat. We biked some more, got to see some blind bald eagles and other birds from a display set-up by the Nature Preserve, look around a craft fair and listen to a band. I parted ways with my group and they headed back to the mainland. I ran into my brother and sister-in-law and stayed up on Kelly’s for a few more cocktails before heading to Port Clinton for the night.
